“K-Pop Demon Hunters,” the film released on Netflix on June 20, is already making waves just one day after its debut. The movie has quickly climbed into the global Top 3 most-watched films on Netflix, drawing massive attention from viewers around the world.

Sensing its viral potential, Netflix wasted no time—changing the header and profile picture of its official X (formerly Twitter) account to spotlight K-Pop Demon Hunters, while also featuring it prominently on the platform’s homepage.

Let’s dive into the plot and explore the key reasons why K-Pop Demon Hunters is becoming a viral hit on Netflix right from day one.

K-Pop Demon Hunters Plot

The world-famous K-pop group Huntrix—made up of Lumi, Mira, and Joy—leads a double life. While they’re celebrated idols performing sold-out stadium concerts, they’re also fierce demon hunters. When they’re not on stage, they secretly use their powers to protect their fans from supernatural threats.

Their songs are not just chart-topping hits — they are also the source of an ancient power that has, for centuries, kept the barrier between the human world and the demon realm intact. Huntrix’s ultimate mission is to seal away the Demon King, Guima, and his army once and for all, keeping them forever banished from our world.

Standing in their way is another K-pop group: the Saja Boyz, a rival boy band. Beneath their idol image lies a dark secret — they are actually five soul reapers, whose true goal is to capture the spirits of their fans and sabotage Huntrix’s missions at every turn.

Will Huntrix be able to overcome the threat of the Saja Boyz and complete their mission before it’s too late?

With an emotionally charged storyline between Lumi, the fearless leader of Huntrix, and Jinwoo, the charismatic but conflicted leader of the Saja Boyz, and a unique universe blending K-pop culture with traditional Korean mythology, K-Pop Demon Hunters is set to become the next global phenomenon.

The stage costumes of the Saja Boys are inspired by the traditional attire of Korean death messengers. In Korean culture, these figures are known as “Jeoseungsaja”, and the group’s name, Saja Boys, is directly derived from this cultural reference.

Tiger inspired by traditional Korean painting motifs

Even though it’s not the main character, an adorable tiger makes an appearance — one that feels very familiar to the Korean audience.

An adorable tiger appears to deliver an important message to the protagonist. It closely resembles the tigers often seen in traditional Korean paintings. The pairing of the tiger and the magpie is also a clear nod to classical Korean art.

The most delightful detail? The magpie is wearing a traditional Korean hat!

Many Korean viewers — myself included — started watching K-Pop Demon Hunters specifically because of this irresistible tiger-and-magpie duo.
